Why Straighten Your Teeth?
As mentioned, there are two main reasons for straightening your teeth: functional & cosmetic.
Functional – If your teeth don’t have the ideal occlusion (how they meet), then it could potentially cause further dental complications. Teeth can be harder to clean and maintain than someone who has an ideal occlusion. Teeth can wear down faster, which can lead to cracks/chips etc. This can cause dental pain and soreness. In some instances you may experience TMJ pain (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction).
In these cases, straightening is advisable so you can achieve and maintain your dental health.
Cosmetic – This effectively covers every other reason for wanting to correct your teeth. If you are unhappy with how your teeth look and the effect it has on your smile, then straightening may be one solution to achieve your goal.
In these cases, straightening is really down to the individual in terms of how much their teeth effects their self confidence. If braces are not used, the dental health will not be affected.
