Why Do We Carry Out X-rays?
During the early stages of tooth decay, your teeth may not be showing any signs that there is any underlying issues going on. An x-ray will show us what lies underneath the tooths enamel, such as, any potential infections of the root or if there has been any bone loss.
We will be able to get a better picture of what is going on with your oral health and it can help us spot any early signs before they are allowed to develop. Early prevention is key for both keeping your natural teeth for as long as possible and also lowering your dental bills (more developed conditions require more complex treatments).
For children, the x-rays can help show us where the adult teeth and when they are likely to appear. This technique can also be used to show where wisdom teeth are and also when they are likely to come through.
How Often Will We Take X-rays?
When you register as a new patient (and you haven’t had a recent dental x-ray) we are likely to take one to assess if their are any hidden underlying issues. If you have recently had an x-ray at another dental practice, you can request these to be sent over to us (as they form part of your medical records).
How often we take x-rays will vary and depend on the patients (e.g. age, oral health history, conditions in their mouth etc) and this can be from every 6 – 24 months.
What Does An X-ray Show?
The most common issues we can identify from an x-ray is tooth decay – this can be in-between teeth, underneath fillings etc. It also helps us to see if you have an infection in the root of a tooth, and how severe this may be (infections can lead to tooth loss!)

Are X-rays Dangerous?
Dental x-rays are very low in radiation and we actually come into contact with more radiation on a day to day basis from natural sources in the environment.
Modern equipment and techniques means dental x-rays are carried out in a safe and controlled environment by experienced professionals.
If you are pregnant please let us know, as we will always take extra care and will only take x-rays as a last precaution (especially during the first trimester).
